This was the first year that TSN has been the Canadian broadcaster for March Madness and they decided to stay with the CBS game from beginning to end and basically you did not hear about the other game going on at the same time especially when there was 32 games throughout the day or when there was 16 games a day. Also unlike the US CBS feed the alternative CBS feed where there was no scoreboard at the top of the screen where they had live updated scores which would keep the viewers up to date about the other games being played at that time. The only problem for the TSN about this scoreboard is that the channel the game was on in the US like Tru TV, TBS, and TNT which Canadian viewers do not get these channels and TSN2 usually had the game that Tru TV had and would only cut into other games at the last moment without any build up before going to the game.
Then when you look at how they dealt with coming back from a commercial break just staying with the CBS feed and only going to the studio for a couple of minutes to get a review of the game that your watching and then go straight to a game in progress until the game that you had been watching comes back from halftime. It was like they were not really in the studio as they were off camera for over a half at a time which just left a empty feeling in my body as I would of like them to do more cut ins and give us the insight and analysis that they are paid the big bucks to do so. Then came Sunday afternoon where TSN2 decided to broadcast the events that took place in the game against the Pittsburgh Penguins and the New York Rangers and TSN decided to broadcast in Nascar race and we did not have any Canadian broadcaster for the first game of the day which was Washington Vs North Carolina which had the questionable running of the clock after the ball went out of bounds and Washington had .5 second instead of 1.1 or 1.2 second. When they finished the hockey TSN went to the studio where the basketball guys talked about the Washington and North Carolina game and did not talk about what happened to the clock like it was non-factor in the outcome of the game which is simply bogus.
I think my feelings towards TSN and their broadcasting efforts is because I have been spoiled by the March Madness action and production of past years which was being broadcasted by the Score TV network where their basketball analyst Tim Micallef in the studio and he is on air when the game use have been watching goes to commercial he is telling the viewers what is happening in the game. More importantly telling us what is happening in other matches and go to another game and when a close game comes back from commercial break and Tim Micallef gives the viewers a good outlook on every game that is being played at the time and when the action is slow Tim Micallef will quickly review a big game that has been played that day and use video to get the point across.
The only benefit of TSN and TSN2 broadcasting the games is that they were able to do in-depth stories on Canadians playing in the tournament like Cory Joesph and Tristan Thompson where they talked to them, then a sit down with their dads, and then a sit down with their moms and put it altogether in a in-depth story on the two Canadians on the Texas basketball team. In the end here is the thing they diffidently could of still done this segment and segments on other Canadians in the tournament without being the broadcaster of the tournament because they still have their sports news program called SportsCentre where they can do these kind of stories.
Please let Tim Micallef be apart of the NCAA March Madness programing again please
