Since the 2016 off season (going into 2017) owners refused to give free agents over 30 big contracts so the big money deals to finish their career and had to take 1-3 years deal for much less per season or wait til the season started to get like 20 million for the season. If the players is lucky a second season option (usually a team and player option so if one party wants out the second year is scarped). This is a huge problem for players because if they reach the majors in their mid-20's they r under team control until they r over 30. The players r not free agents until after 7th major league season during which time a player has 3 years of pre-arbitration where they r given what the team wants to give them (400k-500k most likely). Then 3 years arbitration meaning a player gives a salary for the next season (a high salary) and the team gives a salary for the next season (a low salary) then a judge listens to each side and usually cuts the difference and the player the middle #. The middle season (year 4) can either b a pre or arbitration year depending how their second major league season goes 78% get pre and 22% get arbitration.
Player have been pissed since signing agreeing to the last collective bargained agreement in late 2016 and there was a lot of talk that mlbpa front man tony clark was going 2 lose his job. Four years later players r not going b screwed again a year away from needing a new cba players r looking for less team control so they can get the money they fell they deserve.
Now players also fell they agreed to terms on a covid 2020 season in march and the owners r misremembering that and wanting to pay half their pro rated contract and another 20% if they award the world series this season. Players r looking at a 2-thirds of a season while owners want less than half of a regular season. Players really want 2 c what these clubs r making and owners do not want 2 show them their books.
mlb compared to other sports r really hurting with horrible tv # along with empty stands and an average fanbase in the mid 50s.
Also in a time where most leagues in north america r setting up shop in 1 or 2 isolated spots baseball wants to travel to as many ballpark as possible is simply crazy in this crazy times we r living in.
stay safe
