Carly Ray Jepsen a breakout star in 2012
Carly Ray Jepsen had a year that most people could only dream of it started with a very interesting video for her first hit of the Summer "Call me maybe" where she likes a guy and in the end he just wants to hang out with her brother. This turns into one of the most watched videos on YouTube with over 370 million views in 10 month and has spun of numerous parodies from the Dolphin Cheerleaders to the US Olympic team to everyone in-between. Then the song can be heard everywhere all Summer long and it simply the song of the summer and nothing was as strong all Summer. She then follows that up with a duet with her friend Owl City called "Good Time" which kept her on the music map and is even before she released her CD this year called "Kiss" that was released on September 14, 2012 and sold 46,000 copies in the first week in the US and 8,000 copies in Canada while her song "call me maybe" has over a million buys on itunes in the US alone.
She started her 2012 with Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez hearing Call me maybe on the radio while in Canada and soon was signed to Justin's Schoolboy Records and by the end of the year was at the biggest party in Canada as apart of the 100th Grey Cup as a halftime act. She toured with Justin the second half of the year to sold out crowds and she has picked up a number of awards this year for call me maybe.
This is from a lady who just turned 27 and looks a lot younger than that who had paid her dues in Canada as she auditioned for Canadian idol in 2007 and finished third and will go down as one of the famous Canadian contestants. She put her music out there for years in Canada and had mild air play in Canada for her songs "Tug of War" and "Bucket" and were on her debut album called "Tug of War" and was released late in 2008. She also mentioned in Owl City's song "Vanilla Sky" in 2009 and made a cameo in the video along with the likes of basketball player Shaq O'Neil.
Now Carly future like most others will be doing the very popular disappearing act as it is extremely hard to keep your image and music in the main stream but she will continue to make music that will be played in Canada but who knows if it will catch on anywhere else and she will likely become a judge when the Canadian version of the Voice appears on my TV screen or maybe if it reappears maybe Canadian Idol which put to the side a few years ago.
Hope everyone has a great new year
